Manuscript Critiques

Manuscript critiques have always been an important part of the Jackson Hole Writers Conference. In 2026, we continue to offer registration for short critiques to afternoon conference participants.

Short Critique Guidelines

Please read all of the guidelines for manuscript submissions before opting for critiques and before submitting your manuscript. Remember, you must register for the afternoon conference to be eligible for critiques.

Critique Details
- Critiques cost $100 in addition to the afternoon conference registration fee.
- Local authors provide critiques.
- Visiting faculty authors, agents and editors do not provide critiques.
- Three 15-minute, one-on-one meetings.
- Written comments provided in addition of one-on-one meeting.
Critique Eligibility
- Participants must be registered for the afternoon conference to receive critiques.
- Manuscripts not meeting the requirements listed below will be returned and critique space will not be reserved.
- Intensive workshop participants are not eligible for short critiques.
Submission deadline
- The deadline for receipt of manuscripts is August 31st, 2025.
- If you miss this deadline, you may still be able to reserve critiques depending on availability if you submit a manuscript no later than September 15th. Call or email to discuss late critique options.
Manuscript changes
- If a participant needs to resubmit an updated manuscript, the deadline is August 31st.
- An additional surcharge of $100 is required of all manuscript resubmissions.

If you send us your manuscript and do not receive a confirmation within 24 hours, contact info@jhwriters.org.

Prose

Manuscripts not meeting the following requirements will be returned and critique space will not be reserved.

Length
Prose manuscripts should be no longer than 10 pages plus a title page with author’s name, address, e-mail address, and a phone number. Please also indicate the genre: fiction, nonfiction, or children’s lit.
Digital submissions only
Accepted file formats: .doc, .docx or .pdf
Double-spaced
12 point Times New Roman font only
One-inch margins

Poetry

Manuscripts not meeting the following requirements will be returned and critique space will not be reserved.

Length
Poetry manuscripts should be a single document of five poems no longer than 10 total pages plus a title page with author’s name, address, e-mail address, and a phone number. Please also indicate the genre is poetry.
Digital submissions only
Accepted file formats: .doc, .docx or pdf
Formatting
Poems should be formatted on the page as intended by the author.

If using traditionally lines stanzas, our preference is for single-spaced stanzas with one blank line between stanzas.

.pdf files preferred for poems with unique spacing and layout.
12 point Times New Roman font only
Unless other font choices are intentionally employed for specific purposes within a poem.

Extended Critique Guidelines

Please read all of the guidelines for extended manuscript submissions before opting for critiques and before submitting your manuscript. Remember, you must register for the afternoon conference to be eligible for critiques.

- Extended critiques cost $100 in addition to the afternoon conference registration fee.
- Local authors provide critiques.
- Visiting faculty authors, agents and editors do not provide critiques.
- 45-60 minute one-on-one meeting with local author.
- Written comments provided in addition of one-on-one meeting.

- Manuscripts not meeting the requirements listed below will be returned and critique space will not be reserved.

Poetry manuscripts should be a single document no longer than 20 total pages plus a title page with author’s name, address, e-mail address, and a phone number. Please also indicate the genre is poetry.
Digital submissions only
Accepted file formats: .doc, .docx or pdf
Formatting
Each poem must begin at the top of a new page. Please use page breaks at the end of each poem.

Poems should be formatted on the page as intended by the author.
